We're launching 'The State of Black Business' survey, a statewide qualitative research initiative aimed at deepening understanding of the experiences, challenges, and successes of Black entrepreneurs and business owners across Connecticut.
Running from February 11 to May 12, 2025, this 90-day survey will collect insights that will guide policy development, resource allocation, and community-driven strategies to foster an inclusive and supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem statewide.
Connecticut’s economy thrives on the contributions of its diverse communities, with Black business owners playing a vital role in driving innovation, creating jobs, and strengthening local economies. This research will explore critical areas such as perceptions of state and local support, access to funding and resources, wellness, sustainability, mentorship and networking opportunities, and the impact of state and local policies on Black-owned businesses. The findings will culminate in a detailed report set to be released later this year.

Understanding the Experiences
Black business owners and entrepreneurs navigate a dynamic landscape shaped by both opportunities and systemic barriers. Their experiences reflect a deep sense of resilience, innovation, and community-driven growth. From launching new ventures to sustaining generational businesses, their journeys provide critical insights into the realities of entrepreneurship, including access to capital, mentorship, and market expansion.

Addressing the Challenges
Despite their contributions to local and national economies, Black entrepreneurs often face persistent challenges that limit their potential for growth. Limited access to funding, disparities in business networks, and structural inequalities create significant hurdles. Understanding these challenges is essential to developing solutions that foster economic equity, expand opportunities, and eliminate barriers that have historically constrained Black-owned businesses.

Amplify the Successes
Even in the face of obstacles, Black business owners continue to thrive, driving innovation and economic empowerment in their communities. Their successes highlight the impact of strategic partnerships, perseverance, and creative problem-solving. By amplifying these achievements, we can celebrate their contributions, inspire future entrepreneurs, and advocate for policies that support long-term, sustainable growth.
“By hearing directly from entrepreneurs and Black business owners, we aim to not only celebrate their achievements but also address systemic barriers and build a stronger, more inclusive business environment for all”
